"The need for conformity is the desire to go along with the norms of a group of people, so you will be accepted as an in-group person"

Solomon Asch created an experiment that tested the idea of conformity. He placed several researchers in a room with one participant and showed them a group of lines. Each of the researchers gave the obviously wrong answer to see if the participant would agree. In most cases the Participant agreed with the wrong answer to be part of the group. In some cases where they added two participants the researcher received a variation in answers. The idea of this study was to see what kind of peer pressure it took to cause a person to act as a member of a group rather than an individual.
